Jonathan Lethem Talks With Kangaroos

Here at the online home of The Space Castle comic I like to bring to attention artists who have played a large role in inspiring me to do the things I do.

One such artist is the writer Jonathan Lethem. His early works are my favorite, Gun, With Occasional Music is such an original story involving cute drugs with names like Forgetol and animals given the ability to speak and function in society. Throw in some great humor and a detective story, and it’s gold! I could gush about his works all day but I just want to give a thumbs up to one more, Amnesia Moon. Possibly my favorite of his books, the feel of this world he creates is so surreal and spooky and very humorous. I don’t want to give any plot points away obviously so let me just say that you have post apocalyptic future, mutants, canned food, fast food employees, and actors who also do the daytime soaps!

Dirk Gently’s Holistic Awesomeness

A constant over-the-shoulder critic in my mind for The Space Castle is of course Douglas Adams. I can’t help but think of his ridiculous yet clever humor while drawing. One character he created that has always done it for me is Dirk Gently who if you haven’t read the books is in Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency and The Long, Dark Tea-time of the SoulHis absurd red hat, and bumbling genius are absolute gold! Check ’em out and i guarantee you will be chortling and giggling like an insane person!

E.C. Segar, Cartoon Legend

For anyone unfamiliar with E.C. Segar ( pronounced like a fine cuban Ciiigar) he is the cartoonist responsible for the famous Popeye the Sailorman comic, who made his first appearance in the Thimble Theatre comic by Segar. He has been a source of inspiration for a tiny cartoonist like me. He honed his craft by a correspondence course in cartooning, mainly doing the work by candlelight in his crumby apartment at midnight after working all day. I just love the characters he created, I just had to give him a little recognition on my site.
